The reopening of the Texas A&M’s Memorial Student Center was set for April 21, 2012. This date was actually several months ahead of schedule. The new MSC was originally scheduled to reopen in the summer of 2012. The facility has been under construction since 2009.
R. Bowen Loftin said he was “extremely delighted to announce that the Memorial Student Center – a powerful and symbolic living memorial to all fallen Aggies – will officially reopen on April 21, 2012, several months earlier than previously announced. It is particularly fitting to reopen the building on the day Aggies will hold Muster ceremonies worldwide, a time-honored tradition to pay tribute to those who have passed away the previous year”.
When the MSC was closed for construction the promise was made to students that all currently enrolled students would have the opportunity to enjoy and experience the tradition of the MSC for atleast one year during their academic career. With the MSC finished quicker than anticipated, this promise proves to be true!
Many Texas A&M students were involved in decision-making concerning achitectural design and other topics. The involvement of students in these decisions helps to make students feel even more connected and excited about the facility.
The $120 Million project will be a wonderful facility that encourages and strengthens the growth of education, leadership development and social activities for current Aggies and many more to come! The majority of the cost ($105 Million) was covered by student fees, the additional money came from private fundraising efforts. Mary W. and James B. Murray Jr.; Trisha and L.C. “Chaz” Needly of San Antonio; Alice A. and Erle A. Nye of Dallas; and Kay and Britt Rice of College Station were eight donors who gave significant gifts to the project.
